Devil's Bridge gorge
The Gorges du Giffre, at the Pont du Diable, is a highly aesthetic canyon, which produces extraordinary light when the sun is in the right direction. These mythical gorges are steep-sided with a rather horizontal profile.
Description
The geological formation of the Gorges du Giffre is formed by a lock, known as a glacial cluse.
In the lower valley, the limestone folds are oriented perpendicular to the valley axis. In the Quaternary era, these limestones offered greater resistance to erosion by the glacier. The glacier was only able to punctually carve through the layers.
The kettles were dug out later, by repeated movements of water and pebbles.
